Thanks for the suggestion, Albert. I'll be seeing Alan Martin in a few weeks, and he's got a wide variety of checkers, too.

I don't begrudge anyone reasonable compensation for their labor, or their freedom to charge whatever they want for it (the buyer can always opt out, as I did). But in the context of backgammon checkers, how on earth can it cost a sole proprietor 850% more to put a $170 set back on the shelf than a $20 set? Regardless of retail price, wouldn't a small flat fee per set reflect the actual work involved?
