So if one of those mutts threw up an airball on a free throw attempt the NBA would simply cease to exist? Cool.

Ball has to hit the rim (or made basket swisssssssh) or it's a dead ball I believe. It can't only hit the backboard because then you could slam it against it and play the ball back to yourself or a teammate. In other words airball = dead ball, other team takes it out.
