Someone showed my something in a baseball history once that said the inventor of the bunt never intended the bunt to be a sacrifice. The idea was to try to get on base, but reap the reward of moving the runner along if that failed. The author said that statistically, bunting as a sacrifice has proved to be a terrible choice unless you have a very weak hitter at the plate.

I lost interest in baseball 40 years ago, so I don't pretend to be qualified to respond. This is just an interesting item that I once heard.
