You nailed it. I played this through quite a few times before getting a win (just avoiding the gammon wasn't too hard) and in that situation I did make my 6 pt and gnubg was forced to expose a blot in its home board which I then hit. It quickly got the other checker back around but by then it was too late and I was able to finish off my home board and keep the one remaining checker trapped. It was an interesting exercise as I was not able to roll a full prime around which gave the computer too many opportunities to jump or hop through a broken prime.
