One tip: With the newer versions of gnu you don't need to run muliple instances anymore if you want to utilize every core of your cpu: You can use the multi-threading feature in the settings and specify 2 or more threads now.

About the cpu's: I am using a Q6600 and am quite happy with it. I'm able to let it run at 3Ghz without any special motherboard or cooling. So basically you can get the speed of the Quadcore Extreme for the price of a Q6600.
