White is Player 2
score: 1
pip: 1097 point match pip: 162
score: 4
Blue is Player 1XGID=-a--BBCB-Ab----A--beB-adB-:0:0:1:00:4:1:0:7:10 Blue on roll, cube action?
My rule is when my opponent has three or more checkers on the deuce point it's time to double. It may be early sometimes, but how to win with such a structure is always a challenge. It is also worth considering the strength of a player who gets into such poor positions.
Nice comments, though I have a bone to pick with the last sentence. I think the correlation is less than people imagine. (I refer to the notion of walking up to a board and judging the strength of one or both players purely on the score and/or position reached, not to the quality of play that one might have observed up to that point.)
The way I heard it, XGR++ was making its debut in a tournament, even dressed up in a funny sombrero. It was playing White in the position below and rolled 65:
White is XGR++
score: 1
pip: 1527 point match pip: 190
score: 4
BlueXGID=------EBb-b-bB--Bd-eB---B-:0:0:-1:65:4:1:0:7:10 White to play 65
After White played 17/6 above, Blue made his 5pt with 44, White rolled 66 and played 13/7(2) 8/2(2), and Blue made his 4pt with 11, reaching the position below:
White is XGR++
score: 1
pip: 1177 point match pip: 170
score: 4
BlueXGID=----BBCBa-b-----BbbfB--bB-:0:0:-1:61:4:1:0:7:10 White to play 61
Above, White rolled 61 and played 17/10 (what else?), Blue rolled 21, hitting with 16/15* 16/14, White rolled 61 and played bar/24 8/2, Blue rolled 41 and played 14/9. Finally, White rolled 63, playing 8/2 6/3 (what else?), reaching Tim's cube-action position diagrammed at the top of this post.
