Is it a blunder? I wouldnt say so, but I do know that GNU wants white to crash completely, so is leaving the blot on 2 to allow white more entries, and thusly more ways to crash his homeboard.

Is it overplaying it? Yes. I would just make the board, and be done with it. Rather that, than risk playing against a much better timed 12 backgame.
