I don't think Gnubg plays this well enough for a rollout to convince me that one play wins x.xxxx% more games and the other y.yyyy% more gammons. I think Gnubg's main problem playing from the positions like the starting diagram, where its forces are widely separated, is that it doesn't see the use of positioning checkers in its own outfield. Another problem is, when it gets a 1-2 backgame, that it overestimates the value of having more checkers sent back with no timing.

I think the way to get the most out of the position is to play it yourself many times. If you do, I think you'll see that

(1) not covering the 2 point is certainly playable. When things go right, you send an 8th White checker back, or White crashes completely. For my money, though, White ends up makes the 2 point and has enough play too often for 18/11 to better than 9/2.

(2) the bot makes a lot plays that may seem strange to you, some of which may be right, others are simply wrong. When it's right, you learn something about your own game. When it's wrong, something about the bot's. You be the judge!
