No it does not make it moot. Suppose it was destined that you would miss the two pointer. Wouldn't you rather know right away? Down by 8 with 3 minutes left for example you probably kickoff normally, down by 9 you know to onsides kick.

You argue that in a 3 possession game the choice of when the 2 pointer is missed does not matter anyways. That is faulty though because there is a greater chance of it being a 3 possession game if you had gone for it and missed originally.

I do agree though that most coaches would go for the one pointer first.

I really wish there was a way to prop this argument!

I am familiar with Easterbrook's writing and agree NFL teams punt too often on 4th down.
