First on my list of suspects would be someone the cop had arrested, or the wife had an incident with in her line of work. They might have been looking for one specific item, which they may or may not have found. The item could be a piece of evidence that they think could be used against them in a hearing that hasn't yet happened.

The fact they took the risk they did of being caught during apparently a considerable amount of time spent ransacking the place, plus the fact they didn't take anything to at least make it look like robbery was the motive, suggests both a) urgency of finding the object in question, and b) that they believe they are being watched too closely to get away with taking the valuables for themselves or trying to "fence" them. This supports the idea that it was someone who has been arrested and has a trial coming up.

Second on my list would be former lovers of either party. What they would be looking for: photos, videos, maybe a letter or two.
