Ok. First of all, there is the assertion that "nothing was taken." This of course, we can only either accept or decide is suspect information. The good friend of the couple would be more prone to accepting at face-value that nothing indeed was taken. But, there are really only at most three people who know if it is true: The burgler, the person or persons who actually know what was taken, but would not like to share it.

Let's say that there is a case where at least one of the people in the couple had figured out what was stolen, but didn't want their spouse or others from finding out for whatever embarrassing reason. There could have been evidence of an affair that only one of the members of the couple knew about. This would explain why they could both agree that nothing was detected as missing, since the person involved in the affair would not share, and the spouse would not detect anything missing.

It could also be that, like another said, there is a drug issue involved. Policemen have been known to confiscate drugs and not turn it all in with their report. In this possible case, the policeman might not want the spouse (or anyone else) to discover his illegal activities.

A third possibility jumps to mind quickly as well. Evidence related to some sort of blackmail scheme could have been taken. In this case either one or both of the members of the couple could be involved in blackmailing someone. Again, call me a cynic, but policemen find themselves privy to some sensitive information which could be used against someone fearful of it's release. How many times have you heard/read/seen evidence of a leak during an investigation that could only have come from someone inside a police department.

Fourth and possibly most likely scenario is that the address/apartment of the break-in was mistaken. Burgler(s) were looking for something specific that was not at the address because they were either given bad information or otherwise screwed up in their efforts.

Bank account information would only need to be photographed, not stolen to be used in an identity theft scenario that could play out weeks down the line.

Someone mentioned the idea of intimidation. Here, just the break-in itself could be intimidation. Also, collection of personal information, like lists of relatives addresses etc, could be photographed. Does this person owe a lot of money to a bookie??

Anyway, these are some of the ideas that jump to my mind if i'm put in the position of Inspector Sherlock.
