Yeah, we use the simplest version --If the captain wins, he becomes Box. If the Captain loses he goes to the end of the line and the Box remains box.

With the rules and players we have in our chouette, place, I'd genuinely be surprised if the box didn't show a profit in 29 of 30 games. The most typical violation of that I imagine happens is that the box doubles all three players, who take. Later, they all double back to 4, and in our rules you can take any number of cubes on a re-cube, so he might drop 2 and take the captain in oder to take a shot at keeping the box. So he wins, breaks even on the score sheet (4 - 2 -2 = 0) but keeps the box.

This is a case where the "show a profit" rule would have a positive effect: to keep the box, he'd have to take at least 2 cubes and win, so you'd have one less person waiting around for the game to end after getting passed. (That's why we follow the popular "take at least half the cubes" for initial cubes). But if that particular scenario actually occurs once in 50 chouette games that would be a surprise. Also, the $ benefit of getting the poorly-disciplines box to occasionally take a big pass against you when you're Captain feels worth the occasional extra minutes you have to stand around waiting for a game to the when you get passed on the outside.

The other times the box wins but shows a loss tend to be peculiar games where cubes are all over the place (or maybe he had 'auto' with one player?) and the box doesn't even realize he comes out behind despite beating the captain until the game is over. This sort of game happens in our chouette maybe . . once in 75 or 100 games?

Just this whole thread / conversation sort of illustrates why we prefer the simpler rule. With our rule set, and the particular players we have, it's just not an issue. I can totally envision that with some other rule variations, and different personalities, a chouette in a different town might find the 'show a profit' rule coming up much more frequently, and seem worthwhile.
