"Maybe it doesn't truly bear out over a long period but the small instances where I've played "Must beat the Captain" it appears that the take point against the captain becomes artificially lower and the doubling point for the Captain lags the players until it's pretty much a sure thing as it's more potential profit to simply get into the box than it is to take a chance on getting 2 points with even a moderate double."

(I'm taking it you mean "JUST beat the Captain" -- From what April said I had the sense your Box had to beat the captain + show profit to stay in the box.)

That's a good illustration of my point. In our chouette, I don't think these "take/double" points vary nearly so much as yours sound like. I think well over half the players in our circle are pretty intent on just "doing the right thing" -- you can give up a lot of equity over a long session trying to "get cute" gaining the box or maintaining it. between doubling late in the Captain's chair and taking late in the box, you are throwing quite a bit of money to your opponents. And generally, if some players wish to do that, the rest of us are okay with it -- people are paying for their folly! In fact, upon reflection, I think I could rank the members of our chouette from strongest to weakest and it would correlate quite well with how willing they are to knowingly take a pass just to keep the box. More willing = weaker. So, it's not a 'winning' tactic by any stretch.

Getting into the box is not necessarily "More profitable"! (Especially if you're making bad cube decisions in order to stay there!) It's more volatile because those games count x times more than the others.

And I'm with Mike -- part of the fun of chouettes is adding your knowledge of player temperaments to your knowledge of the game. Sure, if I know a player 'takes deep' against a Captain, I may hold off for an extra roll if it's a low-volatility creep-up-on-a-pass situation. But for every time I do that, there's a time when my partners (properly) double, I roll a joker and get to collect my measley point while they surge on for a gammon. Then I at least get the box for sure. Yippie!

But with 'Show a profit' rules I'm sure you're still getting a lot of that cube variation, I'd think (especially if you allow selective cubing, which is a whole other thing people differ about).
