...there's a sense that dropping a strong Captain while taking the two weaker team-mates (sacrificing the box in the process) in order to harvest extra equity through poorer checker plays is just "not done."
I agree that this is the case in a "must beat the captain" rotation. It generally only happens in our chouette if it's the last game. However, it is NOT the case where the box must simply win the game. That's my main objection to this rotation method, and why I would insist on the rules I proposed before I would play in such a chouette.
