Backgammon - connecting people

In Response To: Backgammon - connecting people (Mochy)

Mochy just touched on a very very important aspect of BG.

People not knowing how to play the 2nd roll and still having fun.

Imagine a world where we encourage people to play BG for fun and to be social and let it be their decision if they want to be winning players or just having fun players. Mochy isn't having as much "fun" because BG is his livelihood and he must win to support his family.

Putting the emphasis on winning tourneys, money, improving your "game" is all great ways to sell lessons and fund events. But it's not the most palatable way to attract people. Marketing BG as a fun thing to do, like darts in a pub will draw more people than the "work harder and win more" marketing campaign.

Most people just want to have fun, so sell BG as a fun thing without the emphasis on winning. If someone chooses to become a winning player then let them choose that option, but lower the barrier to entry and just make it a fun thing. Over time some people will choose to win others will just roll dice move checkers and laugh.

Fun will out sell winning 8 days a week. All this focus on improving your game is meaningless to a person who ain't got a game in the first place.

Ok back to pool....I've known people who have been banging balls for 30 years and cant play a lick but have fun and keep coming back to their league team every week to play. They have more fun in pool than I ever did, and for one hardcore player in pool there's 50 banger's or more.

This constant theme of "improve your game" pushes people out of what your selling weather your the USBGF or Golds Gym. Sell fun, laughs, new friends that's what will attract new players. Mark my words.

PS no time to edit, sorry if there's errors in this post,
