I recommend everyone read Garry Kasparov's "How Life Imitates Chess."

It will teach him more about how to learn and study and approach improvement, and attitude. It's almost hard to believe Kasparov is talking about Chess, as so much of it is applicable to Backgammon, including his intensive study of the openings before moving on.
