streaming with remote commentary

In Response To: streaming with remote commentary (tem_sat)

I've run commentary setups with Hangouts On Air, Webcam IP + OBS, and YouTube Live + OBS. As you point out, similar to MC, once you have players in one room and commentators in the other, it's very little difference if the commentators are the next room over, or the next country over. So you already have the capability :-)

A Webcam IP solution benefits from sending the video over a local network and is what I use for local NEBC event. The network is not good enough for streaming, so this setup allows recording and commentary to be captured live, and uploaded later.

Other solutions depend on sufficient network bandwidth. Hangouts on Air is the easiest to setup, but there is no local capture, so if the network is bad, the match recording gets lost.

For YouTube Live + OBS (Twitch would be similar), if the network is bad the commentary stream will be bad, but at least you get local capture, and can replace the (lower res) streamed version with the (higher res) captured version later if necessary. To run this remotely is similar to how you run MC, you have a stream go out from the match, and then a commentary station uses a program like OBS to patch the match stream and audio together, which gets sent out onto a second stream. Multiple commentators don't even need to be in the same location... in this case one commentator would be responsible for the commentary stream, and would use any voice chat app to mix the audio of other commentators (who would also be watching the match stream). For remote commentary, it helps if the commentator is experienced with using a program like OBS, because then they can control the stream. Currently, commentators enjoy the convenience of just sitting down in front of a mic at the event and having had everything figured out ahead of time for them... if a remote commentator doesn't know how to run OBS, then you can run the commentary station and host the voice chat locally and have the remote commentators connect to that.

Also on this topic, I would like to note my preference for streaming on YouTube live because you get DVR functionality (i.e., rewind and pause during the live broadcast), screen casting to watch on a large TV, ad-free platform, chat, and the recordings are automatically available on the youtube channel when finished. I know less about Twitch, it may have rewind and pause also I'm not sure. I know it does allows screen casting, and the chat might be better, and I think prime members might be able to avoid ads. I sorta hate ustream in comparison, because the ads are overwhelming, and it lacks so many of these other important features too... I really wish the usbgf would stop using ustream - it was an acceptable solution in the past but other platforms just make more sense now - but of course I am very happy to have something over nothing and still tune in regardless.
