Rolling out abandoned positions

In Response To: Rolling out abandoned positions (Nack Ballard)

From one who is massively more interested in backgammon positions (or puzzles) than in other topics that appear on this forum...

The truly bizarre part to me is that many people have said something similar to me either on the forums themselves, in an email, or person to person. What makes it strange is that if you look recently for example at a handful of postings by Hank M there are hardly any views. He posted some bg problems and they garnered very little attention in the ways of replies or views compared to any of the recent threads about anything but backgammon positions.

It would be interesting to list in order of importance what actually makes a thread popular. Here are a couple true tidbits.

  • Sometimes it is more important who posted it than what was posted. In other words, if I had posted the same problems Hank posted, my postings would have received significantly more views.

  • Clickbait. A catchy title will garner views.

  • Replies. If a prominent or controversial member or two of BGO have replied to a thread that thread will be more active. For example I believe if Hank posted a problem, CMC replied and I replied to CMC the original thread would receive a lot more views.

So while lots of you bitch, moan, and complain about too many threads that are about the rules or maybe some other bg related thing that aren't bg problems, you're still a big part of the problem. (not you Nack) You aren't posting problems yourself, you aren't replying to problems posted, and when someone new comes along you may not even be looking at his posts if they are bg problems!
