My two cents (I did promise I would pay extra):

I'm hoping that XG already does most of what would be required.

For every position, there is a finite number of distinct rolls that could have generated that position. For the actual game roll, XG already generated a stored list of plays and their equities. From that list, you can see which make the best variants given the resulting equities.

Similarly, there are the rolls that didn't happen. Does XG store those from earlier look-aheads? If not, it could regenerate when variants are requested (or, optionally, as part of an analysis). Of course, the roll that did happen and the ones that didn't are on equal footing. The combined result, actual and hypothetical, is a good list of candidate variants and their resulting equities. Not a complete list or a perfect list, but I think a good list. From there, it's just a matter of reducing a largish list to a useful one.

For that, the user could request the number of top variants desired and/or specify an equity threshold.

The above assumes that equity differences are a good metric for judging variants, or at least good enough.
