Backgammon vs. TSA

In Response To: Backgammon vs. TSA (Bill Riles)

I have an anecdotal story about going through customs, not TSA. It has nothing to do with backgammon, still it may be good for a laugh. I was 24 and returning to the U.S. from Thialand, where I had been working for my father. A friend had come to visit me in Thailand during my last few months there. We decided to stop in Hawaii for a couple of weeks on the way back to the mainland. In clearing U.S. Customs in Honolulu, I got through the line quickly and walked over to where my friend was taking more time. He was asked several questions, probably because he had been in Thailand a few months and there were a lot of drugs being smuggled from there at the time. I observed the agent asking him the questions and he seemed to be someone I knew. I kept staring at him and realized that he was either the catcher I pitched to during the summer of my junior year in high school or he was a doppleganger. I kept looking at him trying to decide if it really was him. The next thing I knew two agents come up and ask me and my friend to follow them into a private room where they asked us 100 questions and went through every inch of our suitcases and then strip searched us, even using the flashlight to check for drugs in dark places. I asked them what my friend had said to them to cause this and they said; 'nothing, it was you that caused the search because you seemed to be nervously staring at the agent'. I explained why I had done so and aksed if his name was the same as my catchers. It wasn't. The agents laughed and told us to get dressed and be on our way.
