To get a handle on this, you could consider the Elo ratings for all the chess grandmasters and then calculate the mean and standard deviation, then the sigma rating would be:

(2700-mean)/SD

If you took a random sample of the grandmaster elo ratings, this should also give a reasonable estimate.
