I fully agree with Phil regarding the use of clocks. Backgammon is meant to be played fast. It has always been a fast-paced game. That is one of the joys of it. It is fast-paced and exciting, with wild swings. That is what draws people in and keeps them coming back. Using a clock does not mean you can not take your time on important plays or cube decisions, it does discourage spending an inordinate amount of time on trivial plays. The time to study and analyze positions is between tournaments, not at the tournament, when time is at a premium. Playing fast, also, conserves your energy, which you may need to do if you are going to play many matches in a day, and allows you to be more refreshed for the times when you need to think about an important play or cube decision. I think most players play just as well using a clock as they do not using one.
The enjoyment of viewing a streamed match is greatly increased by the use of clocks, as it keeps the viewers from losing interest because of plodding play. If we are going to grow the game through streaming, inwardly and outwardly, we need to provide an entertaining, informative, and fast paced experience for viewers.
These are my personal opinions and are not intended to be taken as representative of the USBGF board's.
