I think that (in the remote chance) Deepmind took on a backgammon challenge it would be extremely beneficial in raising the profile of / interest in our game with the general public. I think it definitely had a positive effect for the game of Go (worldwide TV, internet and newspaper exposure).

Demis Hassabis, Deepmind CEO is a gamer with Greek Cypriot heritage so it is very likely that he has played backgammon in the past. I have emailed his office - fingers crossed my message gets read.
