What would they get out of it?

It has to be said that the 9 point match you quoted was arbitrary. Obviously, a match of sufficient length would result in a near 100% edge for the stronger bot, though would, of course, most probably be way beyond what is ever played in tournaments.

Perhaps it would be better to compare equal time spent playing in the different games. For a fair contest in chess you must play two games, once each with the white pieces. How long does that take, on average? At GM level doesn't one game typically take a few hours? (Googling around it seems both chess and go professional games can last 6 hours or more.) Might two games of top level chess or go average 5-8 hours (not counting breaks)? If so, that might be time equivalent to an approximately 50 point bg match.

But I guess one bot winning 70% or so of 50 point matches against another bot still might not excite a lot of interest.
