Well, I got a reply back from Sarah-Jane Allen, Executive Assistant to Demis Hassabis.
She said that due to the sheer volume of requests for research projects, my request for a backgammon A.I. could not be directly accommodated.
I replied back, thanking her for her response and asked her if, on the off-chance, she could mention it to Demis or any of his Project Leads if the opportunity ever came up during an informal chat.
So no immediate action but maybe something might come from a chance meeting in the office kitchen!
P.S. FWIW I think it would be very interesting to see the independent *styles* of chequer-play and cube-handling this A.I. creates/adopts, given just a set of rules and no human inputs, METs or bear-off databases etc.
IMHO it is possible that some innovative and revelatory strategies & insights could be discovered with this wholly unconstrained approach.
