I believe it is pretty clear that you can double just before the bearoff starts the same way you would on the last roll of the game ATS. Same as dead cube, so I think you are right, you double when the window opens.
In money games, you double or redouble when you are over 50 percent if the bearoff starts on the next roll.
I love variations, and not because, as some critics immediately point out, because I don't like backgammon the way it is, but because it is fun and challenging to try different variations.
But I like variations that complicate the game and add skill and push you to think differently and creatively. I think those kinds of variations also can give you insights into playing "normal" backgammon better as well.
Not sure I like this variation, but if you tell me it really is fun and interesting to play, I am willing to give it a shot.
