Tourney resistance to computer improvements

I recall reading in one of that era's colorful BG mags, a quote from one of the leading players of the day, who when asked about the decline of the mid 70's BG boom, stated that slow play has driven more people away from the game than anything else.
As most of you know, I'm a big proponent of clocks. But I'm calling "bullshit!" to this statement. Maybe it drove that particular player away, but the actual decline of BG at the turn of the 70's --> 80's decade was very unlikely related to slow play. Of course it's hard to prove so I guess everyone can have his/her opinion.
Will the current downturn be blamed on slow play, too?
BTW, as many of you old fogies (like myself) recall, 1979-80 was a recessionary AND inflationary time with an oil crisis and a president (and party) on the verge of getting booted from office. There was an "Iran Hostage Crisis" (US hostages) calling attention to unrest in the Middle East.
See any parallels??
