Tournament attendance by age would be a direct indication. It so happens that people who 2 generations earlier had nothing better to do other than play backgammon or chess or the few other available board games, are now old enough to have enough money and spare time to spend on tournaments.
This is not the case with the new generation that has a choice among hundreds of console or computer war games. I personally give backgammon another 20 years of life.
MCG describes the situation clearly. http://www.simborgbackgammonlessons.com/home/matt-cohn-geier--the-youngest-giant "Backgammon players are a dying breed. It’s sad to me that the game has declined to this state." Also in another interview I read (sorry I don't have the link)he said that everywhere he plays it's all old people.
