If by "normal" you mean you have only the 8pt in your outfield, then you can't cube until it's a pass in a pure race. But it might be too early to cube if you are just a few pips past the point of last take in a race and have few spares. You need at least 5 good spares to cube as early as 1 pip past the point of last take in the race.
