"With the open 4pt as we have here the on roll player bears off so slowly due to this gap. Shot leaving numbers are always a plus too for the player taking/passing even if it's only a couple. Look at the variant below with the same numbers of checkers off but the gap is sealed. Massive pass."

Maybe I'm missing something, but I think it's the 31 pips in the variant vs 35 pips in the original position that is the primary factor responsible for Blue's ~85% vs. 75% winning chances in the two respective positions. The awkwardness due to the 4-point gap that you describe matters, but not as much as the pips.
