Suppose that a single elimination bracket was built as follows: There are 3 groups of 8. The first group of 8 gets a bye into the finals while the winners of the other groups of 8 play in the semifinals.

Am I understanding correctly that you feel that is terribly unfair compared to the alternative of having a 32 person bracket but with 8 byes in the first round instead?
