We, occasionally, play our chouette with the following time controls; 15 seconds per decision and and a 20 second bank. If the clock expires, the laggard must pay 1/2 the value of the cube to his direct opponent (either the captain or the box, crew not included.) All game states are maintained and the game is continued, with the laggard being given an additional 20 seconds. I must admit it gets a little hairy at times and players can make mistakes because of clock pressure, but it is fun and speeds the game, without too severe a pemalty. 25 seconds of reserve time might be the sweet spot.
