In Response To: New Baffle Box Rule Idea (Phil Simborg)

"It happened a few times (his partner and my partner were both baffle-challenged) and we had no problems."

I think you need to get more players to agree to try it, preferably in non-tournament games where you cannot be accused of modifying the rules. Would the Chicago chouette crew agree to try it? It might also be an idea to try it with different baffle boxes.

If a player is watching the roll then I believe they will know whether it went through. A player not watching (almost certainly the opponent of the roller therefore!) might not know, but he will much more likely know whether dice at least went into the box. In that respect the rule is good, as a die bouncing out of a BB onto the board would surely be next to impossible to control (even more so, one would think, from a lipped cup).

A possible problem with such a rule is where a player - hoping to bypass the box - aims to get both dice to skim off the top of it. That could create ambiguity as to whether both dice made contact with it. I think therefore that both dice would have to go into the BB rather than merely clip the top. Why might a player try this? It would save a second or so for dice to not have to pass through the BB, but more likely they just like the idea of retaining some control over the roll (however delusional that might be). A roll where a player simply bounces the dice against the front of the box should also clearly not count.
