Byes in a Swiss

I didn't think about it deeply, but it seems to me Neil's suggestion is equivalent to mine (award 0 wins and 0 losses for a bye), except in one extraordinarily rare circumstance.

The conditions of context in the SVO were that with a third loss, you could not win the tournament and with a fourth loss you stop advancing. Suppose there are say five players left and each of them has had a bye. Unlikely, agreed--but one of the players would have to get a second bye.

Under Neil's proposal a second bye could take someone from 2.5 to 3 losses so that they could not win. Or it could take someone from 3.5 to 4 losses and keep them from advancing.

That may be too remote to worry about, but I don't think you want to have byes add to your loss total and reduce your chances of winning or advancing. Nor do I think they should add to your win total where you are equal in all ways to a player who actually played and won.
