Opinion poll: What does "+" and "–" mean for a relative pipcount?

I never had an opinion of my own on this matter. When I started using a bot I just noticed that when we are ahead in the race (we had less pips than our opponent i.e.) the bots would designate the relative difference with a minus. The only method I ever used to do a relative count was this https://drive.google.com/open?id=1VSpkujGlyZTXnZCHNLwmoUg0tnah2m52 and I did this example just yesterday to check how much faster the criss cross method is. I ended up to +3 meaning we are behind in the race by 3 pips which is the same as to what the bot says.

I wouldn't like this designation to change because a)arithmetically it is correct and b)I would get totally confused if it would.
