When doing a comparative count in chouettes we will say that we are "up" 3 pips if we are leading by 3, or "down" 3 pips if we are trailing by 3. Played in multiple chouettes that do it this way, and nobody ever questioned if it meant we were leading or trailing the race, they just knew. Seems more intuitive to me to state that your up or down in the race.
