Opinion poll: What does "+" and "–" mean for a relative pipcount?

When I am playing (even playing on XG) I basically use the terminology: up 10 pips to mean I am winning by 10 pips or down 10 pips to mean I was losing by 10 pips.

But in the XG use of the + or - I have always understood it as it was programmed. +10 pips means the same as my "down 10 pips."

But I can that as being very confusing to some.
