We can all agree, that to communicate the result, "A", "B", "ahead", "behind", "up" or "down" seems the clearest way to go. But the thing is that when you count something you will end up with a "+" or "-" result first, which you have to mentally convert to the "ahead" or "behind" stuff. So saying "don't use + or -, just go with ahead or behind" doesn't do much for question about counting systems.

At the catastrophic risk of giving Phil too much credit, I believe his idea is to bypass – and +, and instead use A and B race-directionally, with no need to convert. After hardwiring your brain that A means Ahead and B means Behind, you would just use A and B, think A and B, live and breathe A and B, instead of using, thinking, living and breathing – and +.
