Let me enjoy this conversation a little longer. It's fun for me and I hope not too much of an annoyance for you or other readers. If I'll drift too far, let me know.

Nothing it's impossible, so I'm perfectly ready to admit it's just my limits that keep me from imagining counting with A & B instead of + & -. But in any counting system, we use basic math to count something, add, substract, multiply, etc. There are + and - results all over the place. For me to switch to "counting" with A and B from the beginning instead of + and - is just way too big of a leap to make. I'll stick to basic math.

Pipcounts are countable numbers. If my number is smaller, I am "-n pips" from the other number. Smaller number means ahead (in backgammon pipcounts) ergo "-" means ahead and should mean the same in any counting system that deal with comparing pipcounts. This is my view.
