Opinion poll: Overview and conclusion

We can think of it as substitution. Instead of
-9 +2 makes –7... -4 makes –11... +3 makes –8, etc., its
A9 B2 makes A7... A4 makes A11, ...B3 makes A8, etc. These are really just condensed versions ofMinus 9 Plus 2 makes Minus 7... Minus 4 makes Minus 11... Plus 3 makes Minus 8... versus
Ahead 9 behind 2 makes Ahead 7... Ahead 4 makes Ahead 11... Behind 3 makes Ahead 8...Or if "U" and "D" are used instead of "A" and "B," then:
Up 9 Down 2 makes Up 7... Up 4 makes Up 11... Down 3 makes Up 8...
There is a "switching cost" in learning a new way of reading or hearing/processing the signs/words, but the argument would be that the cost is worth it because "minus" and "plus" can be interpreted differently by different people, whereas "ahead" and "behind," or "up" and "down," are not. The ambiguity removal gains more than the switching costs.
Moreover, with Ahead/Behind or Up/Down, the final count (resulting from a cumulative train) can be directly written as spoken as "Ahead 8" or "Up 8" (no translation necessary) and nobody will misunderstand. It is actually the Minus/Plus count that would need to be "converted."
I'm not advocating; I'm just explaining. :)
