Ruling request

The roll stands. Accidental contact with the dice does not cancel the roll.
This is a classic example of why using one set of dice is best. I know people who don't like one set of dice because they don't like the idea of tapping the board to end the turn. I agree. Sometimes people don't tap clearly, or sometimes they look like they are tapping but they are thinking about where to put the checkers....all kinds of problems. So we use a clock, even if it is not turned on, so it is clear when a player indicates he is done.
Using two sets of dice, I believe the best way to help prevent premature rolls is to give the option to the other player whether to accept the roll or not...that way you can be penalized greatly for rolling too soon...you will have to roll over when you roll well, and your roll stands when you roll poorly.
Of course it goes without saying I prefer one set of dice and a baffle box. Even in our chouette, when we use two sets of dice and a baffle box, it is rare to see a premature roll because we are rolling on the same side.
But there is a bigger issue here. In my opinion, every chouette, no matter what the stakes or how often you play, should have a clear, written set of rules so that everyone is put on notice what the rules are and if and when there is a dispute you can point to the written rules to settle it.
Jake and I wrote a set of rules for the Chicago Chou about 35 years ago...it has been revised a few times, but I have a copy in my computer and if there is a dispute I will tell people what the rule says and then send them a copy of the rules later if they want verification.
You can't cover everything in the rules, but you can cover the kinds of things that come up most often and are likely to create conflict, and that keeps things much more civil.
I am happy to share our rules with anyone who wants one. I do have a new email address: phil@simb.org
