Can the method be adapted to give an earlier indication?

@Nack and maxim, and any other genii out there:

As I am working on transitioning from Urquhart to criss-cross, I realize that there is one aspect of the Urquhart method I really miss:

It is sometimes very fast to just do the initial full crossover step, end up at, say, 18 pips ahead, give the near triads and mid and sixpoint stacks a quick glance and realize that there's no way I am not going to be up in the race. I have found this efficient especially when up or down in the race is the main thing to be established or when low on time.

With criss cross, granted, we have a good estimate before the final step, but not really earlier than that, since the "number of checkers on opp's side"-adjustment is very significant.

Do you have ideas or hints as to how I can get a faster approximation out of the criss-cross method?
