A few things about:

Carlsen said in the conference he had the mind already to the tie break, Kasparov and Kramnik made a comment immediately like he showed psicological weakness and now is underdog. Carlsen and not only knew he is a huge favourite in the tie break,the odds set by the bookmakers were 3.5 compared to 3.25 at the beginning for Caruana to win I don't think it had an impact but the prize was 60% for the winner after 12 mathes, 55% if tie break. For me since the beginning I thought it was good enough for both to draw all the matches, I think a change is needed. We have to consider in the past for many years the chess title went to current champion again in case of a tie, Kasparov against Karpov was quite spectacular. Regarding doing everything to maximize the match winning chances is quite an issue, because of the format in some sports it can happen is convenient to lose a match to maximize chances. There are many examples where group system is used, I remember once in tennis Simona Halep could lose the last match of the group in order to kick out Serena Williams from the Master. She didn't so it happened that they met in the final with Serena winning easily. Losing on purpose is bad from fair play point of view and also for respect to the audience but still it happens, here I think it was not such an issue, draw is common in chess and more games came anyway.

Sport today at the high level is also business and show, In Usa more, the NFL cheering I agree is ridicoulous sometimes because the match is lost anyway but you have to consider also the show and the statistics, contracts are signed also based on that, one more sack can help. In NBA the shoots a player can take and the minutes are often counted, there are some agreement rules like in the second quarter both teams must use the second 5, I remember once Messina said when he just moved to Nba he suggested to put the first 5 in order to create a gap but was told is not possible. There are other things i don't like as stupid timeouts taken by coaches when the game is 100% lost and also exist advertising timeouts.
