Just because Chamberlain played that much 50 years ago does not mean it would be smart to do have top players play that much now. The style of defence in the modern game with having to defend out to the three point line and the greater emphasis on team defence with more switching and scrambling is more tiring. With the greater population pool of players there is less of a dropoff from a star to his substitute. There is an understanding now also that injury risk increases when fatigued.
