Reducing the draw percentage

In Response To: Reducing the draw percentage (David Rockwell)

Stalemated player loses -- that's an excellent suggestion David! As I recall, there was at least one game in the WC match that would have ended with bishop + wrong-colored rook pawn and would therefore have been decisive instead of a draw.

Alternatively, stalemate could be a partial win, as Casper suggested. (Perpetual check could be another rule up for discussion. The deliverer might lose or be assigned a partial loss.)

My top three proposals (modified Black gets draw odds, round = series, and Shuffle Chess) also decrease the chances of a draw, while having the additional benefit of reducing or eliminating White's advantage.

Either the second and third of those proposals could be combined with no-stalemate for an even better upgrade, I think.

I agree that shuffle chess (or Fischerandom) is unlikely to ever become the main variation, because while it would arguably be better for Chess going forward, the current grandmasters have put in too many years memorizing the existing openings and would most or all would object strenuously to losing their hard-earned monopoly.

Grandmasters should logically object to no-stalemate on the same grounds (due to all the thousands of hours they've put into endings, many of which would now yield a different result), but the change is less obvious.

Round = series combined with no-stalemate is a good solution that could possibly gain wide support. Each game of a series would be rated in its own speed category (classic, rapid, blitz).

With modified Black gets draw odds, there would never be a draw/tie and thus adding no-stalemate would be unnecessary (though some might prefer this change on other grounds).
