The story goes that in the pre-bot era 10,8 was considered the best play of an opening 53 ...
This is an urban legend. Except for a few authors that have experimented with 10, 8, making the three point has always been the standard play for an opening 5-3. For example Hoyle (1744) writes:
"XIII. Cinq. and Trois, to make the Trois Point in your Table, for a Gammon, or for a Hit."
This advice was repeated many times over the next couple centuries.
