My rule of thumb is, the deeper the gap in your board, the more dangerous it is. (A gap on the 1pt is deeper than a gap on the 2pt, which is deeper than a gap on the 3pt, etc.) This rule of thumb won't always lead to the best play but I find that it's usually a good start.
