It's difficult for me to evaluate whether closing the deeper gap is worth potentially exposing immediate shots on my next roll.

Yes, this can be a difficult call (although in your position 5/3(2) doesn't expose more immediate shots—this happens more often than you might think). In some positions one may even want to create a gap by clearing an interior point. But I can say that I've found that the bot tells me that gap-shifting is a lot more important than I used to think. Certainly, "clearing from the rear" is not what you should be thinking when there's a gap in your board; the rule of thumb about clearing from the rear is primarily intended for gap-free positions.

I guess gap shifting instead might have benefits of reducing the number of unlucky 'follow on' shot sequences?

Yes. The gap gives your opponent a "phantom backgame" which as we know creates lasting shot danger.
