"Do you know any other board game where you would be allowed to stand up and interact with a past World Champion during the course of a game, even if it is just a nod?"
In chess on your opponent's time you can do many things (with the cheating issue now is less) like walking around the playing room, the match is annotated. On your time is different, you need a strong reason to leave the table but if you stay very close I don't think is a problem, I haven't seen any.
I don't understand from where it comes this "poor etiquette" in backgammon, nothing is written in the rules. In chess it is something and I agree it should be as well in backgammon, mainly for people comenting abou luck or trash talking, this is from the chess rules: "It is forbidden to distract or annoy the opponent in any manner whatsoever. This includes unreasonable claims, unreasonable offers of a draw or the introduction of a source of noise into the playing area."
I don't think standing up should enter in this area especially when is on your own time, I have seen and heard about players doing not usual things just before the last roll of a match, everything was ok for the opponent. I can see there are already different opinions in this forum.
