Ruling questions from Cyprus

In Response To: Ruling questions from Cyprus (Florin Popa)

As Florin observes, this issue is not problematic in chess tournaments. It is absolutely routine at every level of the game to walk away from the board on your opponent's time--he may think for half an hour and it would be torture to have to sit at the board for the duration. And by the way, as an ex tournament chess player, I can testify that I considered it a courtesy when my opponent took a walk while I was laboring over a move. Made it much easier to think!

Another understanding in chess tournaments is that--within reason--you can pretty much do anything with your body as long as it is on your time. This includes standing up, leaning over the board, talking to yourself, etc--all actions that might well be distracting to the opponent if you did them on his time. And by the etiquette referenced above, if there is anything you do while you are thinking that bothers the opponent, he or she can just leave the table.

I suppose that in Paris 08 (I'd like to thank Carlo for his apology and for clarifying the circumstances, I had almost all of them wrong) I was assuming that backgammon with clock had a similar etiquette. But there's a more fundamental issue that we should all clarify: Can you talk to your opponent--or, as Carlo did--admonish him when it is his move and his clock is running? I think the answer to this one is "No" but I'd like to know what others think.

And I have another rules question: Under what circumstances can a player stop his own clock as I would have needed to to not have lost precious time in the Paris match? I believe that in chess only the tournament director can stop a clock? Is this covered in our rules?
